The body converts phenylalanine into tyrosine which is essential for the thyroid hormones, some of the brain's chemicals, and making proteins. Because phenylalanine helps produce dopamine and norepinephrine, there is some thought that it might be useful to support people's moods. Taken approximately 1/2 hour before meals, this amino acid may impact the appetite*.
